Saint Anthony’s Festivities in Lisbon: A Night of Sardines, Love, and Celebration!

When June arrives in Lisbon, the city lights up — not just with sun, but with strings of colorful garlands, the sound of guitars, and the irresistible smell of grilled sardines. Welcome to the Festas de Lisboa , and above all, to the magical Night of Saint Anthony , the city’s beloved patron saint and… a true matchmaker 💘

Who is Saint Anthony?

Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon in 1195, right where the Church of Saint Anthony now stands, just by the Sé Cathedral. He’s known for his kindness, care for the poor, and — most intriguingly — for helping people find love.

That’s why, every June, Lisbon celebrates mass weddings , where dozens of couples say “I do” on the same day, in the name of Saint Anthony.

What Happens in Lisbon in June?

Be ready: Lisbon transforms into a giant open-air village — full of paper decorations, street barbecues, live music, and pure joy.

Highlights:

June 12 (evening into the 13th) – the big night. The neighborhoods of Alfama, Graça, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto turn into a nonstop street party. Expect dancing, singing, grilled sardines on bread, and a glass of wine in hand — essentials!

Parade on Avenida da Liberdade – each district (bairro) prepares a themed performance with costumes and music. They compete for the title of Lisbon’s most creative and festive neighborhood.

Casamentos de Santo António – mass weddings held at City Hall. These aren’t staged performances — they’re real couples, real vows. Heartfelt and unforgettable.

Food & drinks – grilled sardines, caldo verde (green soup), bread with chouriço, sweet bolo de Santo António , and homemade wine. Street food during this time is not about speed — it’s about soul.
